About the Band
The band name comes comes from Isaiah 6. Verse 10 says to “Render the hearts of this people insensitive, their ears dull, and their eyes dim, otherwise they might see with their eyes, hear with their ears, understand with their hearts, and return and be healed.” The band may be young, but they are making a mark on the Christian music industry. RtH's driving Pop Rock sound is enhanced by splashes of melodic guitar & keyboard/synth lines, smooth vocal harmonies, and burning harmonica riffs. Their self-produced debut EP released in February 2013. After playing over 70 dates in 2014 the band released the 1st of two Christmas EPs in 2015. September 2016 marked the international release of their newest album Run to Love.. With plans of a new single and Christmas Vol. 2 you can expect to see big things in 2017 from this group of artists
Singer, songwriter, guitarist, bassist, and band leader Mike Cochran felt God's calling on his life at an early age. He started learning to play drums at the age of 4. Growing up near Beckley WV, Mike ministered with many different local Christian artists during his years in high school. He continued his education at Marshall University and obtained a Music Education degree with a percussion focus in 2012. Mike currently lives in Scott Depot with his wife Sonny Jo and daughter Magnolia. He teaches music full-time at Rock Branch Elementary in Nitro, WV. Whether it be teaching, performing, or leading worship, Mike's heart and gifts shine through him on-stage and off.
Drummer, back-up singer, songwriter, and avid Columbus Bluejackets fan Joe Crowe is the only non-West Virginian in the group. Joe grew up just across the Ohio river in Ironton, OH and first found his love in music through Drumline and Marching Percussion. Towards the end of high school, he began getting comfortable behind the drumset as well and decided to improve his skills through attending Marshall University as a Percussion Education Major. Joe was blessed to teach Percussion and Drumline at Chesapeake High School from 2009 to 2016. He is also the Snare Drum Instructor and Sound Engineer for the Marshall University Drumline and Marching Thunder.
Keyboardist, singer, track specialist, and band muscle Shane Stevens (brother to Raice/Son to Barton) is also, YOU GUESSED IT, a drummer. He grew up in Kenova, WV and had played very little piano before joining RtH. He quickly picked up on every note and chord thrown at him and has become a phenomenal keyboardist exceeding all expectations through his hard work. He mastered piano while pursuing a Math education degree at Marshall University AND being the section leader of the Marshall University Drumline as a center Snare.
Guitarist, back-up vocalist, Saxist, and brains of the band Raice Stevens (brother to Shane/Son to Barton) is a jazzer and a rock star all in one. He spent his first years at Marshall University performing with the top Jazz Ensembles and combos before switching his studies to pursue a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences (We're only keeping him for his future cash flow). When Raice takes a solo whether it be on guitar or sax, babies stop crying, musical hunger is satisfied, and faces WILL BE MELTED. Raice is one of the most active gigging musicians in Huntington-Ashland area.
Bassist, vocalist, harmonica destroyer, and the only consistent hat wearer in the group Heath Lafferty (No relation to anyone in the band) is a Jack-of-all trades. He grew up in Beckley, WV and has been blessed with the voice of an angel and the natural talent of Van Gogh. Heath is a full-time Worship leader at The Crossing Baptist Church.
Sound Engineer, tour manager, trailer pack specialist, and one liner king Barton AKA "Bartok" Stevens is the unsung hero in the group. Bartok (Father of Shane and Raice) makes sure that our sound is consistent, powerful, and easy on the ears for all listeners. Barton, originally from Grayson KY, toured the world for many years playing piano with Billy Ray Cyrus. His vast musical knowledge and experience on the road designates him as our rehearsal/tour manager. When something sounds rough, Barton will be the first to call it like he hears it.
Lighting Designer/Engineer, Jonathan Nicholson is the newest addition to the group. Even though he is a talented drummer, guitarist, and bass guitarist you will find him behind the light board doing his best to create an atmosphere where people can be free to experience Jesus through what is happening on stage. Jonathan is a student at Marshall University pursuing a degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Just like God’s commission to Isaiah we feel called to show the world God’s love! Our mission as a band is to “Prepare our hearts through Scripture, prayer, and fellowship to be transparent onstage and lead by example offstage”. Whether people see us at a concert or at the mall, we want there to be no question about who we are and what we stand for!
We really had no idea what we were doing in the beginning. We only knew that our Heavenly Father put words and music in our hearts and we loved to share that with people. Throughout the birth year of RtH we worshiped in some of the smallest church buildings in the country. Most places had never previously allowed contemporary music in their worship.....not to mention sound equipment, electric guitars, drums, synthesizers, or harmonicas. There were some events that we were absolutely terrified of running more people off than we would be able to minister to, but that never happened! We were welcomed with so much love and support from every church family and we got to return that love and support with our talents and hearts. It wasn't long before we knew God was doing something phenomenal with us and the people we've built relationships with. "The calling that God has set before us is not only to see lives saved, but to reach the lukewarm and broken-hearted Christ followers." - Joe Crowe
